HSBC Commissions poll for best lifestyle in Europe and reveals Spain top of the list.

The survey undertaken by YouGov polled almost 22,000 expats living in 100 different countries during the first quarter of 2015. The expats questioned stated that the quality of life, culture and the relative ease of starting a new life in Spain are the reasons that Spain is considered to be the best European location for international settlers.

An impressive seven in ten expats in Spain (72 per cent) confirm that they enjoy immersing themselves in the culture and that integration is welcomed by the local community. Almost half of the respondents confirm that learning Spanish has given them a greater sense of belonging, and over 80 per cent were learning to speak the language at the time of the survey.

It’s also worth noting that HSBC’s survey isn’t alone in ranking Spain high. The World Economic Forum Travel and Tourism Competitive Index Ranking 2015 places Spain as number one and The World Health Organisation ranks Spain as having the eighth best state health care system in the world, not including the additional health care provision provided by a large network of world class private clinics and hospitals.

Although it is impossible to know if property prices will fall further, recent figures suggest the decrease has slowed down nationwide. Buyers have seen prices drop substantially – in some cases up to 30-40% - since the recession started to bite in 2008, bringing what many believe to be over-inflated prices closer to what the real value of the properties are, and in some cases being sold under their true value. For decades Marbella had a reputation of being the playground for the rich and famous. Plush villas owned by Hollywood stars like Sean Connery or Arab royalty, and super-yachts moored in Puerto  Banus  raised the profile of the city and surrounding areas to the world’s favourite spot for summer sun.
